When the Coronado Bridge officially opened on August 3, 1969, the first person to drive across was then–California Governor and future President Ronald Reagan.

Wizard of Oz Inspiration

Author L. Frank Baum spent many winters on the island and wrote several of the Oz books there. The Hotel del Coronado is widely believed to be the inspiration for the Emerald City.

Birth of Naval Aviation

North Island is officially recognized as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation” because Glenn Curtiss used the area for the first successful seaplane flights in 1911.

Not an Island

While often called an island, Coronado is actually a tombolo, connected to the mainland by the Silver Strand rather than surrounded entirely by water.
